Bible Verse
"Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see—how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him."
- Psalm 34:8, MSG
"O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good; How blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who takes refuge in Him."
- Psalm 34:8, AMP
I added two translations here because the meaning of this verse is too powerful to miss. There are two parts to this verse. In the first part we are reminded as to how we should acknowledge God. We are told to taste and see, implying actions of our senses. We should recognize that we have the ability to taste amazing food and see his beautiful creation all around us. In doing so we will see how good it is for us to enjoy these gifts.
The second part of the verse is a reminder of how we blessed we are when we come to him. What does coming to him look like? Look back to the first part of the verse. When we acknowledge him in all that we do, crediting God with the goodness we have, we come to him. Being grateful and thankful for all we do is thanking God for what’s around us. How we view our actions indicates to God how we feel about him. Are we grateful for the food we eat? Are we thankful for our surroundings? Making a habit every day to acknowledge his goodness that he put around us leads to more blessings.
Book Quote
I like this excerpt from A Happy Pocket Full of Money by David Cameron Gikandi. I read this book for the first time a few weeks ago. Now I’m on my second read through because it’s that good. Here’s the excerpt I enjoy:
“Be detached. This allows nature’s creativity to work for you. Detachment means not preferring anything other than what is happening right now… What is happening right now is the perfect manifestation of your previous intentions, thoughts, words, and actions. Preferring an alternative Now leads to delaying the achievement of your goals. Such preference is wanting, and wanting perpetuates a state of wanting.”
Every time I reread this I get a little more centered and grounded. I think less about things I want or don’t have and more about the things I do have. I see the moment as perfect for what it is and I’m rooted in it. How could you want more when you feel like you already have it all? That’s true abundance. Many thanks to David for writing such a good book with great ideas.
Reflection Question
If you knew that you could not fail, and you would only succeed, what would you do?
This is a great question for someone who has struggled to figure out what “their thing” is. I’ve seen successful people in all walks of life, each person having a unique skill set, and a unique path. No two people ever the same. But a commonality among them was that they always persisted in one endeavor until that pursuit succeeded. They didn’t accept failure or setbacks to deter them from their path.
So what I like about this question is that it removes the element of failure. It creates a box of only success which allows you the freedom of choice without psychological barriers. It doesn’t remove barriers but it allows for the discovery of what you would do if you couldn’t fail.
For me it’s forms of giving. Giving products and services that I believe can help people change their lives. Writing posts and books is just a form of this giving that I’m pursuing right now. I also want to give apps and tools to help people on their growth journey. But I didn’t arrive at this conclusion until I eliminated the idea of failure from the process of purpose.
After sitting with this question and finding your answer. This is how you know what you should pursue despite any setbacks along the way. Again, this question is to find the answer of direction not to obtain any armor of protection. This will not remove obstacles from your journey but it will help you get started on the right path. Sit with this for as long as you need it.
